Kurt Myers, PennDOT Deputy Secretary for Driver and Vehicle Services, says as PennDOT begins to process REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and ID cards again, they encourage Pennsylvanians looking to get one to visit PennDOT’s website.
PennDOT has announced that they will resume issuing REAL ID’s at any reopened license centers offering driver’s license services.
PennDOT put REAL ID license issuance operations on hold in March of 2020 as the Coronavirus crisis started in Pennsylvania, but now those services will resume. REAL ID is a federal law that affects how the state issues driver’s licenses and ID cards. If someone has a REAL ID, they will be able to use their driver’s license as a federally-approved form of identification like a passport or military ID, and it can be used as identification to board commercial flights in the United States, and can be used to enter federal buildings.
Also due to the Coronavirus Crisis, the federal government moved the enforcement date for REAL ID from October 1st of this year to October 1st, 2021.
To acquire a REAL ID, PennDOT must verify:
Proof of identity, like a birth certificate
Proof of social security number
Two proofs of current physical PA Address
Proof of any legal name changes
People can log on to PennDOT.gov to find a list of open Driver’s License Centers or to order their REAL ID if they have been pre-approved.
