State police say a Northern Cambria woman fled the scene of a traffic crash in Cherryhill Township yesterday and later crashed and was injured after troopers used a PIT maneuver to stop her.
At 10:14 yesterday morning, a trooper on patrol saw the 27-year-old woman’s 2002 Chevy Impala driving erratically on Route 403 in the area of Hancock Street and Peach Avenue in Clymer. He pulled her over on Hillside Drive, right off the highway, but as he exited his vehicle, the woman pulled out around his cruiser and fled back onto 403, striking another police cruise which was responding to assist.
The vehicle fled south on 403 as the troopers gave chase, and when the driver went wide on a left curve, she almost struck oncoming vehicles. The troopers then initiated the PIT maneuver near Spaulding Road, which involves contacting the fleeing car to cause it to slide sideways. The Impala went off the road and crashed into an embankment, overturning and coming to rest on its roof.
The troopers rendered medical aid to the woman until Citizens Ambulance arrived. The woman was later flown to Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville.
Police are continuing to investigate before filing any charges.
