The Covid-19 pandemic has even reached into Punxsutawney Phil’s cozy, heated burrow. The Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club has announced that Gobbler’s Knob will be quiet on February 2nd as Punxsy Phil goes virtual.
The annual event draws thousands of people to Punxsutawney and the surrounding area and is a major boon to businesses, but the club says in a statement on its website that the potential covid risk is too great.
Punxsy Phil will make his famous weather prediction on television, internet, and through live streaming, and the club is also planning other virtual events.
A glimmer of hope: if somehow it’s determined that it’s logistically and safely possible to hold in-person events, the club will release that information on www.groundhog.org.
