State Police in Punxsutawney issued a release Wednesday reminding residents to beware of scams, con artists, and home invasions.
Authorities note that scammers have been known to target the area in the spring, offering unbelievable deals on home improvement services and shop tools. Police say in incidents of home invasions, scammers have been known to work in pairs; one will keep you busy while the other goes through your home looking for money and valuables. Police advise residents that if anyone asks to gain entry to your home, you should ask for photo ID noting that all utility workers must carry photo ID. Residents should also be aware of phone scams.
Police note that residents should always lock their doors when they are outside, check with utility companies by phone if someone comes to your door, beware of unsolicited home repairmen, to pay by check so the payment can be stopped if needed, and to call police to report a scam incident immediately.
Individuals who have suffered a lost may be eligible for assistance through their county office of victim services at the courthouse.
