The Pirates were one strike away from getting their first series sweep of the year. They didn’t get it, falling to the Miami Marlins, 6-5 in ten innings.
Chris Stratton was on the mound in the bottom of the ninth with a runner on third and two outs when Bryan De la Cruz singled in the game-tying run.
In the top of the 10th, Ke’Bryan Hayes scored on a sacrifice fly for the Pirates, but in the bottom of the inning, the Marlins’ Lewin Diaz bombed a 3-2 Chad Kuhl pitch for a game-winning walkoff two-run home run.
Cole Tucker and Kevin Newman each had two hits for the Pirates and starter Max Kranick struck out six hitters in a row as he went five innings and gave up three earned runs. Pittsburgh was 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
The Bucs move on to Cincinnati to play the Reds tonight. It’s a 6:15 airtime on Fox Sports 100.9 with the Pirates sending Dillon Peters (1-2, 2.66 ERA) to the mound against Vladimir Gutierrez (9-6, 4.25 ERA) of the Reds.
A day after earning his first win as a Pirate, pitcher Bryse Wilson landed on the ten-day injured list with a tight hamstring suffered when he hit the bag running the bases on Saturday against the Marlins.
