Could controlling the spread of coronavirus be as simple as chewing a piece of gum?
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania think so, and are seeking the go-ahead for clinical trials to see for sure. Researchers at Penn’s School of Dental Medicine say chewing gum laced with a plant-grown protein traps and neutralizes the COVID virus. They report the gum can lower viral load in saliva and potentially reduce transmission rates. Researchers also indicate viral loads found in the saliva of vaccinated people are quite similar to the unvaccinated, so it’s thought the gum’s neutralizing properties are especially effective in that regard.
As always, more study is needed.
