The State Game Commission is developing a plan to re-introduce the American marten into the Pennsylvania wilds.
Martens are a weasel-like member of the mustelid family, about the same size as the American mink with a similar length to a squirrel. They are omnivores which eat plants, insects, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Their main diet is rodents, plants, and insects. The creatures disappeared from Pennsylvania’s woods about 120 years ago.
The Game Commission has scheduled a series of informational presentations across the commonwealth. The nearest one to Indiana County will be April 4th from 6:30 to 8 PM at the Game Commission Southwest Region Office along Route 711 between Bolivar and Ligonier, near Champion Lakes Golf Course.
