Coach Mike Tomlin held his weekly news conference yesterday and discussed the injury to quarterback Kenny Pickett and how it could affect the team ahead of Thursday’s matchup against New England.
Pickett left Sunday’s game in the second quarter after suffering what was later deemed a “high ankle sprain,” and he underwent a medical procedure yesterday in Pittsburgh.
Tomlin said it was a preexisting injury that showed up on the team’s medical report last week, but was reaggravated in the game.
With Pickett out this week, backup Mitch Trubisky will start under center against the Patriots. He filled in for the remainder of Sunday’s game and went 11-for-17 with 117 yards and a touchdown.
When asked why third-string quarterback Mason Rudolph won’t be given an opportunity to earn a starting spot, Tomlin said he works mainly behind the scenes.
The Steelers signed former Ravens and Penn State quarterback Trace McSorely to their practice squad. He’s appeared in nine NFL games, going 48-of-93 passing with 502 yards and one touchdown.
Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was a full participant in practice yesterday despite suffering a broken hand Sunday afternoon. Defensive tackle Montravious Adams also practiced in full as he’s recovering from a knee injury. Center Mason Cole (neck) and defensive tackle Keeanu Benton (oblique) were limited.
Week 13 wrapped up last night with Cincinnati downing Jacksonville, 34-31, in overtime.
