Before the Steelers take the field, the Penguins will take the ice today against the Seattle Kraken. The Pens on Saturday moved the game to a 1 o’clock faceoff this afternoon when the Steelers’ game was rescheduled, so hockey fans can get home in time to watch football.
At the halfway point of the season, the Penguins are 20-15-6 and have dropped their last two games in overtime, making five straight overtime losses.
Coach Mike Sullivan says they need to get better fast in extra time, when teams play 3-on-3 hockey.
The Kraken come into the game red-hot. They are only 19-14-9 on the season but they have won nine games in a row. They’re in fifth place in the Pacific Division while the Penguins are sixth in the Metro.
The Pens were 0-for-4 on the power play against Carolina on Saturday and it’s ranked 26th in the NHL, far below average, especially with the star power they have in their lineup.
Sullivan says he’s trying to find the answers, whether it’s strategy or personnel.
The Penguins will welcome defenseman Brian Dumoulin back to Pittsburgh. He skates for Seattle now after playing ten seasons with the Pens. Sullivan says he’s a great presence, on the ice and off it.
Sidney Crosby has put together a resurgent season with the Penguins, even though he’s played as well as anyone in recent years. Crosby says as he ages, he’s learned the importance of taking care of his body.
Crosby says he still is in contact with Dumoulin, even though he is playing across the continent in the Pacific northwest. He says it will be tough facing his old friend today.
