The Pittsburgh Pirates nearly staged a late comeback but fell short in a 5-4 extra-innings loss to the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday.
Down by three in the ninth, back-to-back doubles from Tommy Pham and Adam Frazier tied the game, but a sacrifice fly in the 10th by Kyle Manzardo gave Cleveland the win. The loss completed a sweep of the Pirates, who now head to Los Angeles for a six-game road trip. Manager Derek Shelton emphasized the need for more consistency after the team followed a strong series against the Nationals with three straight losses.
Mitch Keller pitched well but received no run support for the third game in a row.
