A crash occurred yesterday afternoon near Punxsy Area Hospital.
According Punxsutawney State Police, eyewitness accounts and published reports, the accident happened just before 4 pm yesterday on North Main Street in Young Twp.
A passenger vehicle collided with a drilling rig truck and left the car severely damaged with debris littering the roadway.
The female driver of the car was trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters with the Jaws of Life. Punxsutawney firefighters and rescue personnel from Elk Run, rescue squads from Lindsey and Central responded, along with Jefferson County EMS.
Witnesses say the drilling rig – with a Howard Drilling company of Mount Jewett placard – was traveling north on Route 36 near the Professional Plaza when it collided with the car. There were no other passengers.
No one on the drilling rig truck was injured. The name of the driver was not released. But she was transported to Punxsutawney Area Hospital and then flown by Medical helicopter to an area trauma center.
