The Punxsutawney Area School Board had its first review of the 2021-2022 budget, which has an increase of $4 million and was heavily impacted by COVID-19.
According to the Punxsy Spirit, Susan H. Robertson, business manager, said the budget total for the current school year was $42,513,362, and it has increased to $47.5 million for 2021-2022.
She said COVID-19 caused the 2021-2022 budget to go up since last year because they are budgeting for the use of COVID-19 funds that they’ve received. Robertson said they will receive COVID-19 money over the next two years but it is restrictive in terms of what they can use it for.
Robertson said school code and the PA Department of Education does not permit the district to go over its budget once it’s set for the year and the budget continues as a work in progress.
