With the expansion of Major League rosters yesterday, the Pirates promoted pitcher Johan Oviedo and outfielder Cal Mitchell from Indianapolis and announced that Oviedo will start tonight against Toronto at PNC Park. The Bucs acquired the 24-year-old right-hander from the Cardinals for Jose Quintana at the trade deadline. He was 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA for St. Louis this season and started four games with a 0.79 ERA for Indy.
The Pirates also announced the rotation for the weekend series, which will include Saturday’s inductions of the first class of the Pirates hall of Fame. Roansy Contreras will start tomorrow and JT Brubaker goes on Sunday.
ALTOONA CURVE
Endy Rodriguez hit home runs from both sides of the plate as Altoona blasted Akron, 13-7 last night. The Curve scored six runs in the 3rd inning and five in the 8th. Nick Gonzalez had three hits and Aaron Shackelford had two and drove in three runs. The Curve had only nine hits on the night but Akron committed four errors.
Matt Eckelman was promoted from Greensboro to Altoona yesterday and got the win, pitching two innings and giving up two runs. The Curve also announced that pitcher Luis Ortiz has been promoted to Indianapolis, pitcher JC Flowers was placed on the seven-day injured list retroactive to last Monday, and pitcher Tyler Samaniego is on the Temporary Inactive List.
