Nearly two-thirds of Pennsylvania is under what is termed a “moderate drought.”
Rainfall in May ranged from 10 percent below normal in the extreme western counties, to as much as 50 percent below average for the eastern three quarters. That trend has continued in the early days of June: The National Drought Mitigation Center reports a swath from northwest to southeast Pennsylvania is under a moderate drought, with the rest considered abnormally dry.
The state Department of Environmental Protection has not declared a drought watch or warning as its main indicators still are within normal parameters at this time.
