Gary Lee Stonbraker, 85, of Punxsutawney, passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, March 28, 2025.
He was born in Punxsutawney on July 26, 1939, a son of the late Carl Jewell Stonbraker, Jr. and Eileen Emma (Love) Stonbraker.
On July 7,1980, he married Carol Ann (Boozer) Powell. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage of nearly 45 years.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, he lived a life of service, hard work and unwavering love for the outdoors.
Following graduation from the Punxsutawney Area High School in 1957, he served in the United States Navy.
After his military career, he returned home where he operated several service stations in Punxsutawney. He also pursued his education at Penn State and IUP, earning his Masters. He started teaching and eventually became the Director of Elementary Education for the Punxsutawney Area School District for many years.
Outside of his professional and family life, Gary found true joy in the great outdoors. He would spend most of his outdoor time at the Punxsutawney Hunting Club for over 50 years.
He was proceeded in death by his parents and a grandson, Gary Lee Bedell, Jr.
In addition to his wife Carol, he is survived by six children, Cheryl Stonbraker, Lisa (Gary) Bedell, Michael (Jayme) Stonbraker, Matt (Julie) Powell, Mark (Melissa) Powell, all of Punxsutawney and Molly (David) Demchak of Monroeville; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother, Roger (Terrie) Stonbraker of Aberdeen, Maryland; and numerous nephews and nieces including Lee (Stonbraker) Knox of Punxsutawney.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation. Arrangements entrusted to Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
