The largest natural gas power plant in the United States is coming to Indiana County.
Homer City Redevelopment has announced that the facility will go in at the site of the former Homer City Generating Station. The 4.5 gigawatt plant is expected to double the power output of the original coal facility. It will rely on natural gas from the Marcellus Shale natural gas field that is under parts of Pennsylvania and other states. The plant is expected to provide power to 13 states and Washington, D.C., through PJM and the New York Independent System Operator, along with a giant AI data center campus on-site.
The project’s price tag is over $10 billion, including infrastructure and site prep, but not the cost of building the data centers. The company expects to hire 3500 construction workers to build the site. Construction could begin later this year, with the first of the seven turbines expected to arrive sometime next year.
Power could start flowing from the plant in late 2027.
